My first day of marriage counseling

My first day of marriage counseling We have been together for fifteen years and we have two kids. We have been in couples therapy enough different times for me to know that I hate being in couples therapy with him because he never changes. Its always been more productive for me to go to therapy alone, where at least I can get things done. But now we are desperate, so Ive capitulated. We park the car and walk into the building of the couples therapist. I remember one couples therapist telling us that we are in good shape because we drove there together. Today I know that we would have driven in separate cars if we had two cars. I delegated finding a therapist to my husband. After all, my first book just came out and I blog almost every day. I am busy. I know my penchant for delegating is part of the problem, but I thought this would be one last hurrah. We get to the office. The sign on the door says Divorce Law Offices and there is a list of people with Esqs at the end. I say, Were going to a divorce lawyer? I dont want a divorce. Its Wisconsin, he says, Its not like New York City where there are skyscrapers devoted to therapist offices. We see a mediator. I start talking. I tell him we are not there to get a divorce. Were there to keep our marriage together. Is there someone else we can see? My husband says hes thinking he might be there to get a divorce. I see we are a parody of a couple who cannot communicate. When I was doing research for a column about divorce law, I talked with a lot of divorce lawyers, and each one said that so many divorces could be avoided if the people would talk. One attorney told me he helps one couple a month get back together, and thats his favorite part of his job. I tell myself, based on this, that divorce lawyers are good at keeping marriages together because they see so many marriages fall apart. We talk about our marriage. I think things are difficult because my husband gave up working to take care of our kids and it didnt work out. My husband thinks things got bad because taking care of our son who has autism is extremely difficult and we take it out on each other so we dont take it out on him. There is truth to what my husband says. Eighty percent of parents who have a child with autism get a divorce. But I dont want to blame my failing marriage on my cute little five-year-old. Not that I dont want someone to blame. I do. But I think it is more complicated than that. I explain how my career is going great. I tell the mediator I have a busy speaking schedule and a six-figure contract for my next book. I even talk about my blog, and the estimated 450,000 page views a month, even though you can trust me on this: Our divorce mediator from Middleton, Wisconsin does not read blogs. At this point, I think my husband is going to tell the mediator about how he gave up his career for the kids and me and he is totally disappointed. But instead he says to me, A lot of people I talk with say that I am being abused by you. I am shocked. Its a big allegation. But I say, A lot of people I talk with think I should get rid of you. Thats as bad as it gets, right there. Because the mediator interjects and says that if you want to try to stay together for the kids, its worth it. He says, The research shows divorce is very hard on kids, and especially kids under five. But he adds, You wont be able to hold things together just to parent the kids. You will need some love for each other. I say quickly that I have that. It is easy for me to remember how much fun I had with my husband before we had kids. Its easy for me to remember that every time I look-but-dont-really-look for men to have an affair with, I find myself looking at someone who is like my husband: I still love him. My husband is not so quick to say he still loves me. So all I can do is think while he thinks. I think about the research about how a career does not make people happy. When you are in love and someone asks you how you are, you say, Im so happy even if you are unemployed. When your career is going well and your marriage isnt when someone asks you how you are you say, My career is going great. The mediator starts talking about how the next step will be a contract to follow rules of engagement. You have to start being nice to each other, says the mediator. Right now that seems almost impossible. We have to wait, though. My husband is deciding if he has any love for me. He asks the mediator, How do I know if its love? The mediator says, If you care about her life, for right now, thats enough. Finally my husband says to me, Im so sorry that life is not better for you when your career is going so well. Youve worked so hard for this. The mediator nods. So the thought of having to squeeze regular gym sessions and staying fit into an already crammed timetable can be enough to make even the most organised person blanche. Yet, in the era of fast food and ready meals, the importance of keeping healthy and staying fit is higher than ever. These exercise hacks can help you adjust your normal daily routine to keep fit on the go. During your commute The obvious adjustments, such as walking or cycling to work, are often easier said than done, especially if yours is a long commute. Instead, try making small adjustments to your journey that lengthen the amount of time you spend on your feet. Take the stairs when you leave the station â€" you burn one calorie for every six steps you walk up, so those who commute to Hampstead Tube Station (with its 320 steps) will burn 50 calories every morning just by choosing not to take the escalator. Stand on the tube instead of sitting, as standing for an hour burns 50 calories more than sitting for an hour, and since you’ll be sitting down all day at work anyway, it’s hardly like you need a rest. If you commute by bus, try out some tiptoe exercises while waiting at the bus stop tiptoe raises, where you stand flatfooted, then raise yourself on to your tiptoes, then repeat make an excellent workout for your calves, even if they do incite strange glances from your fellow passengers. At the office A recent NHS survey suggested that 4/5 Brits work a sedentary office job, so if this is you, there are definitely ways you can shape your day so that sitting behind a computer screen doesn’t translate itself to your waist line. Ask your boss if you can sit on a gym ball instead of a chair â€" you won’t feel the difference, but this will force your body to make small, imperceptible adjustments in order to maintain balance, which will work your core muscles and burn calories. It will also make you more aware of your posture, as the lack of back support will make you conscious of sitting up straighter. Alternatively, invest in a mini exercise bike (or ‘Desk Cycle’), a kind of tiny pedal-pusher that fits under your desk, enabling you to replicate the motions of cycling without leaving your workstation â€" perfect for multitasking. In your lunch break While it is definitely good for your health to get some fresh air on your lunchbreak, there’s no need to spend your lunch hour going for runs or taking a yoga class if you simply haven’t got time. High intensity cardiovascular workouts are as effective as low intensity but longer sessions â€" so if you can’t fit in a half hour jog, try a so-called ‘7-minute work-out’ instead. Developed by the Human Performance Institute, the theory is that an intense 7-minute workout is as good for the body as a low intensity gym session, and far easier to put into practice in an office environment. Guides to the kind of exercise you can partake in as part of a 7-minute workout can be found for free on YouTube, but rest assured, 7-minute workouts won’t demand any specialist equipment as the only resistance they require is from your existing body weight. If, by some miracle, you find that you do have time for a gym session in your lunch break, keep it productive by multitasking and listening to a lecture or podcast while you work out. It can seem tempting to pound along to EDM, but the dulcet tones of Melvyn Bragg or Brian Cox will keep your brain in shape while your body works out, thus maximising productivity. For some free podcasts on science and culture, the BBC iPlayer Radio app contains lots of archived Radio 4 podcasts that you can download and listen to without internet. After work Given that being sedentary has been linked to an increased likelihood of a heart attack (according to the NHS website, sitting all day can double the risk), you want to minimise the amount of time you spend sitting down out of office hours. When meeting friends to socialise, opt for more active ways of catching up than simply going for a drink or sitting in a pub. Going for a walk together is much better for your health than more passive activities, while enabling you the same opportunity to catch up and saving you money. If you replaced an hour of going for coffee with an hour of walking, you could burn between 1,000 and 1,500 calories per week â€" and gain a reputation as the quirky friend who goes for walks instead of cocktails. So, forget the New Year’s Resolution to take up Karate â€" you’re never going to go swimming every morning at 5am. Instead, try out some of these minor adjustments to your daily life in order to save money, increase productivity, keep fit and stay healthy â€" you need never sell your soul to a multiplex gym ever again. A great resume is important, but it’s not a silver bullet. It can’t single-handedly land you the position of a lifetime. There’s still a lot of work that you need to do. And, unfortunately for those playing catch-up, a lot of that work is investment in time and energy that are best done before you need a resume. 1. Eliminate Technical Weaknesses Do a frank self-evaluation, comparing your skill set to the idealized skill set described in your target positions. Also look at the skill sets of people more advanced in your target field. How do your technical skills compare? Honestly identify areas of needing improvement. Then get to work on actually making those improvements andâ€"even betterâ€"adding some awesome achievements and skills that your competition won’t have. Always look toward your goal and stay ahead of your competition. 2. Eliminate Perceived Weaknesses Again, do a frank self-evaluation, this time focusing on soft skills and your circumstances. What areas would an employer worry about? Are you impatient? How does that impatience reveal itself in your resume? Are you a job hopper? New to the area? Figure out what real or perceived weaknesses might make an employer hesitate to interview or hire you, and then systematically address them. Keep in mind many traits may be perceived as weaknesses in one context, might be recast as strengths in another. So while you address these weaknesses, also consider whether you need to change the context or prism through which they’re viewed. 3. Clean Up Digital Dirt Conduct internet searches of your name, phone number, email addresses, etc. Do an image search. What information do you find? Get rid ofâ€"or buryâ€"anything you don’t want to explain in a job interview or that otherwise may be an obstacle to your goal. Lock up social profiles like Facebook, remove tags from photos, and de-link personal blogs from your name by using an alias. Then build a cache of positive informationâ€"a professional LinkedIn profile, articles, and other informationâ€"that will help bury the bad stuff onto page three or four of the Google search. 5. Establish Yourself As A Thought Leader Your options on establishing yourself as an expert may be limited by your current employer. If your current employer allows it, write articles and blog posts. Volunteer to serve as a panelist. Present at conferences. Get involved with professional organizations as a committee member or officer. Get your name out there as a professional who’s knowledgeable and reliable. As you advance in your career, you can increasingly establish your bona fides as someone who’s creative and cutting edge, but grounded in historical context. 6. Establish Your Network Reconnect with family, friends, classmates, and colleagues. Don’t start out by asking for favors. Instead, find out what they’re up to these days, and let them know what you’ve been doing. If they need assistance and you can provide it, then offer to help them out. Build good karma. Then start branching out your network to grow it, by connecting with professionals in shared interest groups or organizations, fellow alumni, and others. Be a good citizen, offer friendly and thoughtful opinions, assist people when you can. These people have the power to change your career in both the short-term and the long-term. Of course, it’s never too late to do these things. But the earlier you get started, the easier it will be to shorten your job search.
